Shae’s Signature Pubs Group Story

Shae’s Signature Pubs Group Story

Within Central and South East region, we have a close working relationship with Job Centres who we keep updated on upcoming events and opportunities for young people. Shae had been introduced to ‘Get Hired’ through his Mum who works within a Job Centre. As Shae was due to be a school leaver this year, his Mum encouraged him to get in touch with the Edinburgh centre to find out more about how ‘Get Hired’ could help him to gain more direction, and experience with interviews and gain employment.
Shae attended the Get Hired Edinburgh Event held on 23rd May in St Columba’s Free Church beside Edinburgh Castle. The event was busy with 28 young people, 5 employers, 3 support agencies and lots of wonderful Standard Life Aberdeen and Wheatley Group volunteers who made a massive contribution.
The Get Hired model appealed to Shae as he was unsure of what direction he was looking to take in his working life. The employer pitches provided him with lots of different opportunities to hear first-hand about live vacancies, the qualities employers are looking for from candidates and a brief insight into the sectors working environments.
Shae had previously worked (alongside his school responsibilities) in a child soft play area but with a lack of interview experience, he was nervous about how to structure answers and provide specific examples of experience in interviews. He found the hands-on practice interview skills workshop beneficial before meeting employers.
Shae signed up for interviews with TSB, Waldorf Astoria, Edinburgh University Students Association (EUSA) and Signature Pubs Group. Feedback received was positive, EUSA said

‘Shae probably impressed us the most with his proactive approach (seeking us out prior to interview to show how keen he was in our organisation), his confident manner and considered approach when answering questions. He was very articulate and asked some great questions as well. His calm and confident manner would be of great benefit to any place he works for in future’.

After the event, ALL employers Shae initially interviewed with, were enthusiastic to arrange second interviews. However, he rapidly secured employment with Signature Pubs Group. He is now working a 50 hour per week contract with Signature Pubs Group in their new establishment ‘Cold Town House’ in Edinburgh city centre.

Shae’s delighted that the event had a variety of opportunities and he’s found direction in his career. Shae said that from the event he gained

‘a job that I love, it’s busy, I work hard but I’m really enjoying it’.

We are thrilled to have supported Shae to find direction, confidence and full-time paid employment that he is enjoying.
